How to Use

The Fireless Cooker works by retaining the heat energy built up during a short initial boil, allowing your food to continue cooking without any additional fuel — saving you up to 88% energy.

Steps

  1. Prepare your food as usual (e.g. soak beans, ndengu, or wash rice).
  2. Bring the food to a boil in your sufuria on any fire source.
  3. Line the bottom of the fireless cooker with an old blanket, sweater, or towel to protect the filler material, then transfer the covered sufuria inside.
  4. Close the fireless cooker and leave for the recommended time — no more tending required.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use a pan that is at least three-quarters full to minimise air space.
  • Always use a well-fitting lid on your sufuria.
  • For grains like maize and beans, ensure water sits above the food.
  • Do not open the cooker before the recommended cooking time is up.
  • Do not leave food inside for more than 8 hours, as the temperature will drop below the safe threshold of 49°C.

Cooking Times

Cooking times vary by food type. For example: rice requires just 5 minutes simmering and 30 minutes fireless time, while dry beans need 30 minutes simmering and 3 hours fireless time. On average, the fireless cooker saves 50% of energy compared to conventional cooking.
